Its mid-March again, and just like last year St Patrick´s Day snuck up on you. The green beer and whiskey day is so close now that you can taste it. This Monday, March 17th marks the day where “Everyone’s Irish”. Of course, if you’re going to do St. Paddy’s Day properly, it has got to be Dublin. Paint the town green alongside thousands of Irishmen and tourists in silly hats. The Guinness and Jameson will undoubtedly be flowing until it runs dry. Dublin is the obvious choice among St Patrick´s Day locations, but we have put together a list of 5 other great cities to enjoy this festive Irish occasion. As always if you are looking for a local event near you go straight to Vamos for more Irish event inspiration.
1-Chicago, IL USA
Each year the city of Chicago shows its Irish Pride in a multi-day celebration. Starting with Chicago River being dyed an emerald green. Followed by a massive collection of Irish-inspired floats and dancers, in city-wide parades. The South Side Irish Parade is one of the more traditional parades in the city put on by this township’s large Irish community. This township is a must see during this festive time of year with its many Irish pubs, the parties seem to spill on to the streets.
2-San Francisco, CA USA
On the West Coast, there’s no Saint Patrick’s Day celebration that’s quite like the one that takes place in San Francisco. Following the city’s iconic trolley tracks, San Francisco’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade, which dates back to 1852, is dubbed one of the most fashionable parades in the country. Get downtown early to see the parade and stay late as the city comes alive with parties. The bars draw large crowds where green beer is served until it runs out. I suggest you make it into Johnny Foleys, 243 O´Farrell St, as this traditional pub throws one of the best parties in town.
Florence may not seem like your typical St. Patrick’s Day destination, but from March 17th through March 22nd, Florentines honor the patron saint of Ireland with a ‘Festa Irlandese,’ or Irish Festival. The city offers an Italian spin on the holiday still offering up the traditional events like pub crawls, music, and parties just with an Italian twist. For those of you looking for traditional Irish pub experience head to Finnegan’s, which is said to be the only Irish-owned pub in the city. No matter what you are looking for you will find it and you’re sure to have a great time in Florence.
Toronto does St. Patrick´s Day a bit different kicking off the day’s festivities with a Grand Marshal Ball. This year’s event, honoring World and Olympic boxing Champion Katie Taylor, will be held on Friday, March 14 at the Hilton Toronto, 145 Richmond Street West. Toronto´s St. Patrick´s Day Parade will be hosted on Sunday the 16th and is one of the largest in North America. The city is set for a weekend of amazing activities, festivals, and parties.
5-Boston, MA USA
Last but certainly not least is Boston. Boston claims to be the first American city to celebrate St Patrick´s Day, starting in 1737. The city comes alive with a large parade and parties all over the city. Last year attracted large crowds with of over a quarter of a million people flooding the city streets. This year won’t disappoint. If you are looking for something special check out Flann O’Brien’s, 1619 Tremont St., and don’t forget to try the Irish Nachos.
